It was once the source of life, light and warmth. But now the sun has turned the entire world into baked and barren wasteland. Forests are scorched. Animal carcasses line the roads. Even the nights are dazzling bright. Marie (Hanna Herzsprung), her little sister Leonie (Lisa Vicari) and Phillip (Lars Eidinger) are heading for the mountains in a car with covered windows. Rumor has it there is still water there. Along the way they run into Tom (Stipe Erceg), a first-rate mechanic that becomes indispensible. But can they trust him? Tension grows in the small group. As if things weren't bad enough, they are lured into an ambush. Their real battle for survival begins.

Director Tim Fehlbaum envisioned a post-apocalyptic world baking in an eternal summer. This is his Hell, a scorched landscape, water an ever scarce commodity, and the social order amongst the few survivors disintegrating rapidly. On the road we encounter a trio in the uncomfortably near year of 2016. There’s a young woman, Marie (Hannah Herzsprung), her young sister Leonie (Lisa Vicari), and a man, Phillip (Lars Eidinger), whose car provides momentary protection from the dazzling, damaging rays.

Hell (2011)

With fuel at a premium they pick up a dangerous stranger, Tom (Stipe Erceg), and head for the mountains clinging to the consolatory notion that reserves of water await. But, of course, they can’t be sure of anything nor of the human threats that may attempt to intercept them on route.

Hell (2011)

This 2011 German production was made with the participation of high concept director Roland Emmerich whose name features prominently in press materials even though he acted only as executive producer. Clearly he’s decided to take a precocious and very young director under his wings.

Hell (2011)

The director has created Marie in the mold of Ripley, a female warrior who is sure to outlast much of the male competition. An intriguing duel is set up with the third act introduction of matriarchal Barbara (Angela Winkler), leader of a ‘family’ of survivors who have ulterior motives for their initially friendly rejoinders. In films of this stock-in-trade variety it’s no great stretch to imagine just what kind of ‘family’ we’re talking about.

Hell (2011)

There’s no denying some of Fehlbaum’s narrative elements are built on strong ideas but he fails to provide any real depth or unique psychological motivation for his characters. We certainly comprehend the powerful drive behind Marie’s desire to save her sister at all costs but this clichéd quest becomes dulled beneath the admittedly impressive visuals which will have you grasping for a cool face towel at times to counteract the impressive of an encroaching, oppressive heat force.

Hell (2011)

In summary then, the sun-blasted aesthetic of Hell gives it a uniqueness, but of a type that can only be carried as far as Fehlbaum's limiting scenarios will take it. To some extent he boxes himself in a corner: the wider context of this place is confined to oblique references of pre-apocalypse days and a glimpsed newspaper headline blaring reports of dangerous solar activity.

Hell (2011)

The minimal dialogue and lack of exposition possibly harms the film’s credibility, but on the plus side, the performances are uniformly decent in that they never revert to histrionics or conscience-cleansing tirades. And Fehlbaum does manage to extract mild tension from a series of kinetically shot, judiciously placed ‘action’ scenes.
