Banged Up Abroad – Series 1 (2006)

This series tells the true stories that would be any travelers worst nightmare – when a holiday in paradise becomes a journey into hell that ends up in prison abroad.

Through graphic dramatic reconstruction, each film tells the story of someone whos been arrested and thrown into a foreign prison. It could be for smuggling drugs, falling foul of local corrupt policemen or for being duped into carrying illegal goods through customs. In all cases, the films follow the sinking sense of horror from the build up to the moment of arrest, their journey through an incomprehensible legal process, the coming to terms with the details of life in a hellhole jail, and the devastating fall out with their family and friends.

Episode 1 (25th Sept 2006) – Scott and Lucy’s Story
Lucy Baker and Scott Campbell were living their dream. Working little and playing hard in Ibiza for the summer season, neither wanted the party to end so when the party moved on, so did they but it wasn’t long before they were heading for broke. Out of luck and out of money, the offer of the holiday of a lifetime and a healthy reward at the end seemed just too good to be true All they had to do was bring back a little cannabis into Amsterdam, where was the risk in that?

Episode 2 (2nd October 2006) – Sandra Gregory’s Story
When Sandra was 25 she left a happy middle class upbringing in Kent and the modest antiques business she’d set up to go on holiday to Thailand for two months. She fell in love with the country and stayed for two years, teaching English to Thais.

When Sandra fell ill she was unable to continue teaching and found herself without any money – not even the fare for the flight home. Then she met Robert Locke, who seemed to offer her a way out of her predicament.

Episode 3 (9th Oct 2006) – Marks Story
Mark was bitten by the traveling bug when he was 18, enamored by the places that most people only saw on TV. Then he met Mary and really fell in love. They moved in together and talked about marriage and Mark worked three jobs, shelving his desire to travel. Despite his hard work, the bills were piling up and their debts mounting when Mary’s brother flew in from Taiwan with pockets full of cash and an offer to bail them out.

Episode 4 (16th Oct 2006) – Denis and Donald’s Story
When 45 year-old yachtsman Donald MacNeil had a call from two acquaintances offering him a month’s freelance teaching in the Mediterranean he couldn’t believe his luck. But as the month drew to an end, Donald’s suspicions that this trip was not all that it seemed became terrifyingly real. Threatening that there was nowhere to hide should he turn on them, Donald was given a new course, Venezuela, to collect 30 million pounds worth of cocaine. Donald’s good fortune was about to become a nightmare that would change his life forever.
