One of the great raconteurs of stage and screen, Spalding Gray, came together with one of cinema’s boldest image-makers, Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh, for Gray’s Anatomy, a spellbinding adaptation of Gray’s 1993 monologue of the same name (cowritten with Renée Shafransky). In it, Gray, with typical sardonic relish, chronicles his arduous journey through the diagnosis and treatment of a rare and alarming ocular condition. For the monologist, this experience occasioned a meditation on illness and mortality, medicine and metaphysics; for the filmmaker, it was a chance to experiment with ways of bringing his subject’s words to brilliant, eye-opening life.
The film is something of a fancy-dress version of the stage work Gray began performing in 1993. Seated at a simple desk and with just a mike, lamp and glass of water at hand , the 50-ish Gray, sporting long gray hair and his Rhode Island accent, launches into his neurotic narrative of medical procrastination after the discovery of distorted vision in his left eye. Having been raised a Christian Scientist, Gray initially demurs on religious grounds and begins searching for methods of natural healing that might enable him to escape the knife. Removing a live audience from the equation, Soderbergh becomes a bold participant in the storytelling. The backdrop keeps changing, from a brick wall to drapes, windows and assorted landscapes. The lighting is in constant flux, often punctuating the text on cue. Gray, who had a role in Soderbergh's 1993 feature "King of the Hill," is very much on top of his game delivering the piece, and once again can count himself fortunate to have collaborated with a top-flight talent in transferring one of his monologues to film.

Wow, a great film. It is one of a kind, so I can't compare it to anything else. Those of us from the 60s who knew the weirdos Spaulding consulted, especially enjoyed the film. His ability to enter the skin of so many characters instantly, while still looking at them from the outside, is a real gift. He is not sarcastic. He "likes to learn things" and hence in this film we find him raking leaves in a Hassidic synagogue, "eye"ing Japanese psychic surgery patients whisking around an operating table; gasping for air, his mouth pressed to the bottom of a sweat lodge tent; and in one particularly hilarious segment, submitting to treatment by a seriously nearsighted "nutritional optometrist." I loved this movie. It is a riveting example of storytelling, of the power of one human voice to mesmerize the rest of us.IMDB Reviewer
