The story follows Georges, a middle-aged, alcoholic cop who feels unfulfilled and lonely. When his young partner, Didier, marries Barbara, Georges feels a sense of betrayal, viewing their partnership as a "kind of marriage" that has been interrupted.
While Georges tasks Didier with a round-the-clock stakeout to protect a mutual friend, he begins a torrid and manipulative affair with Barbara. The film delves into the "sexual tug of war" between the characters, ultimately portraying Barbara as a "coldly sexual explorer" who emerges stronger from the messy, unhealthy dynamics surrounding her.
