Set in Montreal during the disco phenomenon some 35 years ago, Funkytown follows the life of a group of colorful characters. We follow their lives and tribulations as everyone converges on a regular basis at Montreal's hot disco spot: Starlight. Along the way, several events take place that change these characters' lives. As these characters' lives unfold, the Parti Québécois takes power changing the cultural landscape in Quebec while the disco craze slowly fades. While we keep up with these various characters - it is Bastien who is a central part of this story. His drug addiction, dreams to become an actor and womanizing - make him the "bigger than life" typical 70s character around which the whole story revolves.

Filmmaker Daniel Roby says his nightclubbing habit lasted no more than a year, about 20 years ago, when he was 18. “Then it was done. Now it takes me a week to recuperate after a night of clubbing!”

But despite the fact it’s been a while since he went nightclubbing himself, Roby says he was totally fascinated by the idea of bringing the underground lore of Montreal’s golden disco era—the late ’70s and early ’80s—to the big screen. Two years ago, he was approached by producer Simon Trottier, who had done extensive research on Montreal’s disco era and wanted to make a dramatic feature about it.

Roby’s first feature, La Peau blanche (White Skin, 2004), led to his winning the Claude Jutra Award at the Genies for best first feature. The director was looking for an intriguing second feature project, and Funkytown—written by playwright and screenwriter Steve Galluccio (Mambo Italiano)—seemed the perfect fit. “I was really attracted by the phenomenon of the disco years,” says Roby. “I loved the idea of discovering Montreal as a big international player in the music scene at the time.”

The result is Funkytown, starring Patrick Huard, a multi-character ensemble film which tells the sprawling stories of the city’s disco underworld. “I loved Steve’s script from the start. He had decided to write a multi-character piece with many parallel storylines and I thought it was a great way to explore the era. I was amazed at his punch, his humour, and especially the power of his dialogue.”

Roby adds that the melding of his style and Galluccio’s made for a welcome stylistic tension within Funkytown, which is due out this summer. “Steve’s tendency is more towards comedy. And my tendency is more towards drama. I always go for the realism, but the film is a drama about some funny crazy eccentric characters who are interacting with people who are trying to have normal lives at a time when excess was in easy reach for everyone.”

Roby says the crew did their best to capture the detail of the time. “The TV show called Disco Dance Party in the movie is inspired by Et ça tourne, a Télé-Métropole Canal 10 show that we found in the network’s archives. And the club called the Starlight in the movie is based on the famous Limelight, which was the epicentre of Montreal disco in the ’70s.

“We were so lucky because we got to shoot the club scenes in the actual location where the Limelight was and recreate a real disco club on the dancefloor where all that history actually happened.”
