Roland Wolf (Robin Renucci) poses as a reporter to interview a popular television personality (Philippe Noiret) he believes is responsible for the disappearance of his sister. The struggling actress had taken a job as a companion to the star's sickly ward Catherine (Anne Brochet). Roland discovers Catherine is being drugged by her benefactor who has stolen her inheritance and possibly committed murder.

Roland Wolf, jeune journaliste, se fait inviter par Christian Legagneur (Philippe Noiret), sous prétexte d'écrire la biographie de ce présentateur-vedette de télévision. En réalité, il cherche à retrouver la trace de sa sœur Madeleine, mystérieusement disparue. Celle-ci était l'amie de Catherine, la filleule de Legagneur, qui dépérit, victime d'un mal étrange. Roland devient l'amant de Catherine, et démasque Legagneur qui cherche à la tuer pour s'emparer de sa fortune. Cerné par la police, Legagneur, lors d'une émission en direct, avoue sa culpabilité ainsi que son mépris pour son public.
