The protagonists of Over the Edge are the teen-aged offspring of the residents of a planned suburban community. This bland little town has been designed with conformity in mind, and with no thought of making the kids' lives worth living. Even worse, there is very little opportunity for any of the teens to grow "out" of the community and live elsewhere. Consequently, the kids rebel by drinking themselves sick, dealing in drugs, and indulging in deadly violence. Inasmuch as the local cops are predisposed to beat the teens into submission, the kids retaliate by directing their frustrations at the Law; the results are tragic, to be sure, but in no way predictable. Over the Edge struck as sensitive a nerve with young 1970s moviegoers as Rebel Without a Cause did with their 1950s forebears. Matt Dillon made his screen debut in Over the Edge, distinguishing himself in an ensemble cast that also includes Vincent Spano, Andy Romano and Ellen Geer. The screenplay was written by Charles Haas and Tim Hunter; the soundtrack songs feature the Ramones.
IMDB
I can say this without an ounce of reservation or irony; This movie is a FUCKING CLASSIC.
I've never seen a movie that I related to as much as this. Don't get me wrong, I didn't do tons of crazy drugs when I was a kid, and I sure as hell didn't shoot at cops, but the overall tone of this movie was very realistic.
Okay, here's the plot, it may sound simple but it's a great canvas for this film. You've got your main character Carl, a good kid with average suburban middle class parents, they just want the best for him. He hangs out with Richie White (Matt Dillon's debut, this performance wouldn't be matched until SOMETHING ABOUT MARY) and some other unsavory dudes. Y'see Richie doesn't have it as good as Carl, so he does drugs and fucks and shit. Carl's down with this because, shit, that's what teenagers do.
Now there's this rec center where all the kids hang out. I mean that's the only thing to do since the town they live in is a vast suburban wasteland. Well when some kids get caught with drugs by the Man, they close the rec center down. Big mistake.
The kids have nowhere to go, and nothing to do. Except revolt. And revolt they do. The climatic ending scene is nothing short of genius. I swear, all these new movies coming out with their explosions and planes and all this shit doesn't even come close to how exciting the end scene of this movie is.
Anyways, this is easily the best teenage rebellion movie ever. And definitely one of the best 70's movies as well. The acting, direction and writing is all top notch. The visuals perfectly paint the picture of just how desolate and down right empty the suburbs can be. Not too mention the soundtrack is riddled with classics by Cheap Trick, Van Halen, the Cars, and the Ramones.
It's also worth noting that this movie is fucking punk rock. I mean in every sense. Besides the music, the kids in this movie just don't give a fuck. And it's not out of apathy but necessity. They've been burned by their teachers, their parents and society in general. So of course the natural reaction is, "You don't give a fuck about us and what we want? Fine, here's a taste of your own fucking medicine dude!"
I mean I hardly ever get sentimental about movies, but this one really struck a chord with me.
The sad thing about this flick is it would never get made nowadays, at least not by somebody who has the means to show it to the masses. I mean you've got kids openly doing drugs and fucking and shooting at cops and setting shit on fire. And the irony is, the movie would never get made because our society has become more and more repressive over the past few years, something that the film focusses on quite closely.
This movie is a classic in every sense, with all the asinine school shootings going on and all this hysteria about teenagers getting more and more out of control, OVER THE EDGE never seemed so relavent. Not bad for a movie made over 20 years ago.
