With the end of the North American Civil War, the manufacturers of repeating rifles find a profitable means of making money selling the weapons to the North American Indians, using the front man John Lattimer to sell the rifles to the Cheyenne. While traveling in a stagecoach with Calamity Jane and William "Buffalo Bill" Cody and his young wife Louisa Cody that want to settle down in Hays City managing a hotel, Wild Bill Hickok finds the guide Breezy wounded by arrows and telling that the Indians are attacking a fort using repeating rifles. Hickok meets Gen. George A. Custer that assigns Buffalo Bill to guide a troop with ammunition to help the fort. Meanwhile the Cheyenne kidnap Calamity Jane, forcing Hickok to expose himself to rescue her.

Une Aventure de Buffalo Bill (1936)

Cecil B DeMille was arguably the most flamboyant motion picture maker of his time and perhaps of any time. With a career spanning from the silent era till 1956 with the color extravaganza The Ten Commandments, with Charlton Heston's star making performance as Moses - a film still shown on television each year at Easter. DeMille was as famous as any contemporary movie star and much more prominent than any other behind the camera film maker.

Une Aventure de Buffalo Bill (1936)

DeMille became the stereotype of the motion picture director with the folding chair, the megaphone, the boots and riding breeches, and the command, "Lights, camera, action!" that has often been depicted in movies and even parodied by Cecil B DeMille himself in the Billy Wilder classic Sunset Boulevard.

Une Aventure de Buffalo Bill (1936)

The Plainsman purports to tell the story of the Wild West, focusing on all the varied events that telescoped the entire expansion from sea to sea into a two hour movie starring Gary Cooper and Jean Arthur as Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane.

Une Aventure de Buffalo Bill (1936)

Never one to allow the facts to get in the way of a good story, Cecil B DeMille conflated all the legends into one big stew of action that is a real crowd pleaser so long as you do not fret if it's all true or not. The movie starts with Abraham Lincoln starting the western expansion on the eve of his assassination and quickly moves through the prairie days to the Indian Wars and Custer's Last Stand, the legendary Buffalo Bill Cody forming a frequent counterpoint to Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. I imagine Buffalo Bill with his grandiose Wild West Show was probably a surrogate for CB Demille.

Une Aventure de Buffalo Bill (1936)

The story also covers Eastern capitalists with their factories wanting to maintain income after the loss of the big Civil War contracts for arms and ammunition and this provides grist for the obligatory selling guns to the Indians sequence that shows the Indian uprisings fueled by unscrupulous traders who give the Indians the means to resist the western expansion, which they do. Bad pale faces - bad!

Une Aventure de Buffalo Bill (1936)

The movie has lots of spills and chills with Buffalo Bill and Wild Bill fighting Indians and breaking up the arms ring but not before Custer is defeated at the Little Big Horn. The movie ends with Wild Bill's assassination at the poker game with the "dead man's hand" - black aces and eights.

Une Aventure de Buffalo Bill (1936)

Lots of familiar faces make up the cast with Gary Cooper and Jean Arthur leading the pack and James Ellison as Buffalo Bill; with Charles Bickford, Porter Hall, Paul Harvey, and Anthony Quinn among the familiar faces.
Une Aventure de Buffalo Bill (1936)

The Plainsman is an entertaining western, no doubt a classic, which is actual even today. Gary Cooper is Wild Bill Hickok, ideal for the role, together with John Wayne and James Stewart, they were the best actors that played western heroes in their generation. Jean Arthur is great as Calamity Jane, nobody that I know played it better than her. Even if might not be historically accurate, the film manages to capture the most important about Hickok and about the time it takes place. Sometimes you have to sacrifice History to make your point and that is what DeMille does here.

Une Aventure de Buffalo Bill (1936)

The friendship of Hickok with Buffalo Bill, the selling of rifles to the Indians by a great manufacturer to compensate for the losses he would have because of the end of the civil war, Custer and Little Big Horn, the uneasy relationship between Buffalo Bill's wife, a religious woman, with Hickok a man who had killed plenty, also the unusual love affair between Hickok and Calamity all this makes 'The Plainsman' a non conventional and interesting film. Anthony Quinn has a very short appearance, that already shows what a great actor he was going to become. A lot of care was taken to show the original guns of that time.
