The Eisner Award-winning comic series Sin City comes to life in this live-action feature adaptation from director Robert Rodriguez and creator Frank Miller. Interweaving multiple storylines from the series' history, this violent crime noir paints the picture of the ultimate town without pity through the eyes of its roughest characters. There's the street thug Marv (Mickey Rourke), whose desperate quest to find the killer of a prostitute named Goldie (Jaime King) will lead him to the foulest edges of town. Inhabiting many of those areas is Dwight (Clive Owen), a photographer in league with the sordid ladies of Sin City, headed by Gail (Rosario Dawson), who opens up a mess of trouble after tangling with a corrupt cop by the name of Jackie Boy (Benicio Del Toro). Finally, there's Hartigan (Bruce Willis), an ex-cop with a heart problem who's hell-bent on protecting a stripper named Nancy (Jessica Alba). Featuring a who's who supporting cast that includes Elijah Wood, Brittany Murphy, Devon Aoki, and Nick Stahl, Sin City promises to be one of the most direct translations from page to screen of a comic series, with shots and dialogue adapted straight from the original comic's panels. Rodriguez quit the Director's Guild when they refused to let Frank Miller co-direct the film, a deal hashed out after the two collaborators developed and shot the opening scene utilizing a green-screen process to harness the stark, black-and-white look of the books as a litmus test for the rest of the production. Quentin Tarantino was brought in and reportedly paid one dollar to direct an extended scene between Del Toro and Owen that amounts to one issue of The Big Fat Kill miniseries.

Rober Ebert's Article

For all its excesses, and "Sin City" wouldn't be "Sin City" without them, the film is enormously fascinating, mostly entertaining, and always a delight to the eyes and ears (if not always to the stomach). No, this one is not for the kiddies, although anything titled "Sin City" is going to be a distinct temptation when the cat's away. For open-minded adults, the film is a minor sensation, and with its newly added material, commentaries, and featurettes, the unrated DVD set is a double delight.

Sin City (2005) [Recut & Extended Edition]

You cannot describe "Frank Miller's Sin City" without using a word like "ultra-violence". I've seen a number of Robert Rodriguez films ("Desperado", "Spy Kids", "From Dusk 'til Dawn", etc.) and I find it ironic that the one in which the violence is most realistic is the one based on - and made to look like - a comic book.

Sin City (2005) [Recut & Extended Edition]

"Frank Miller's Sin City" - as the title would suggest - is based on the series of comics by writer and artist Frank Miller (he does his own coloring and lettering, too.) Famous for having made Daredevil popular again and revitalized Batman in the 1980s with Batman:Year One and the Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, in the 1990s, Miller started a series of gitty film noir graphic novels set in Basin City (aka Sin City). Rodriguez was so taken by the stories and visual style of the books that he sought out Miller and convinced him to make the movie with him. Filmed amost entirely in front of a green screen - in the style of "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow", "Frank Miller's Sin City" is a stunning visual marvel.

Sin City (2005) [Recut & Extended Edition]

It resembles almost exactly the black-and-white look of the comic book with only hints of color here and there. Rather than rewriting the stories of Sin City, Rodriguez used the graphic novels as story boards, taking the stories directly from three full length Sin City stories - "The Hard Goodbye", "The Big Fat Kill" and "That Yellow Bastard" - as well as a short story, "The Customer Is Always Right". Rodriguez meshes the stories together, resulting in a "Pulp Fiction" style of storytelling, but otherwise, the movie is faithful to the graphic novels, with almost every scene looking exactly as it did in the graphic novel.

Sin City (2005) [Recut & Extended Edition]

Rodriguez shares directing duties with Miller himself, meaning that the finished product will have the creator's stamp of approval. And while this was a risky move by Rodriguez (Miller had never directed a film before,) it pays off. For added star power, Rodriguez has friend Quentin Tarantino direct one scene (resulting in the odd credit of "special guest director") and packs the movie with stars (including some old Rodriguez friends, and some new ones.) Stars include Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, Clive Owen, Mickey Rourke, Elijah Wood, Brittany Murphy, Rosario Dawson, Carla Gugino, Benicio Del Toro, Alexis Bledel, Nick Stahl, Powers Boothe, Michael Madsen, Michael Clarke Dunca, Josh Hartnett, and Rutger Hauer. Such casting is made possible because of the use of green screen and the episodic nature of the story. In many cases, scenes involving two or more actors were filmed seperately and then joined together digitally. One entire fight scene between Elijah Wood and Mickey Rourke was done this way.

Sin City (2005) [Recut & Extended Edition]

The story itself is a compelling 21st century film noir serial. The only recurring characters are the city itself and Kadie's, the bar where the stories intersect. Each tale is one of violence, revenge, murder, sex, and all that other good stuff. There's blood in profuse amounts, as well as ample nudity. (Cheers to Carla Gugino for being faithful to the way her character was drawn by Miller and appearing almost totally naked. Jeers to Jesicca Alba and Brittany Murphy for not being as committed.) This is certainly not a movie for everyone. Some - even most - people will be turned off by the violence and nudity, which is a shame, because the visuals are masterful, a true watershed moment in filmmaking.

Sin City (2005) [Recut & Extended Edition]

There are three stories: The Hard Goodbye, in which Marv sets out to find who killed the woman of his dreams (Jaime King), The Big Fat Kill, which features Dwight, trying to prevent a war breaking out between the cops, the mob and the Old Town Girls after the death of Jackie Boy, and That Yellow Bastard, which features ailing cop Hartigan, trying to catch a child killer (Nick Stahl). All are extremely hard-bitten pulp revenge stories, which stay close to the original graphic novels, and, as a result, the movie is very violent.

Sin City (2005) [Recut & Extended Edition]

People might criticise the fact that the women appear to be prostitutes, strippers or damsels in distress. This is the way Miller has written them and, in this instance, the audience will have to like it, or lump it. Miller, on the other hand, might benefit from an appointment with the therapist.

The performances are the trump card, with an unrecognisable Mickey Rourke doing a sterling job as Marv, Bruce Willis delivering the goods as Hartigan and Clive Owen mean and moody as Dwight. The ladies are also good, although some seem to be a little underwritten. However, Rosario Dawson excels as the gorgeous and deadly Gail. The best performance comes from Benicio Del Toro, as the sleazeball cop Jackie Boy. He is marvellously depraved and humorous in a role that could so easily have been a typical movie thug.

Sin City (2005) [Recut & Extended Edition]

The film is truly fantastic. I know it will mostly appeal to comic book fans like myself, but people should give it a chance, if only to experience its style. For fans, it will be manna from heaven.
