Founded upon the famous revolt of the gladiators, the romance of ancient Rome, is a true story of Pagan Rome. Spartacus, the strongest of the Thracian Chieftains, his sister Idamis and her betrothed Artemon are captured by Crassus. Spartacus and Artemon are forced to be gladiators. Idamis is forced to be Crassus' daughter, Narona's slave. This blockbuster film was produced in Italy in 1913 and was purchased for U.S. distribution by the very enterprising George Kleine. Kleine made a fortune in the early days of cinema by shrewdly purchasing the rights to other spectacular movies, including "The Last Days Of Pompeii", "Julius Caeser", "The Lion Of Venice", "Othello", "Antony And Cleopatra", "Vanity Fair" and "Quo Vadis?" He knew that audiences wanted to be wowed and his films never failed to deliver.

IMDB

This is one of a group of Italian epics mainly based on Classical themes that were made in the around 1910 - 1914. The importance of these films can not be understated. They were some of the first successful long films and some of the first feature films. Theater owners thought, at that time, it was best to show a lot of short films. That way, if one bombed with the audience the others might make up for it. These Italian films changed all that.

Of course, there was the spectacle - and nothing like it had been done before. Big flashy spectacle sells and Hollywood was never to forget this lesson.

Spartacus (1913)

These films had tremendous influence on D. W. Griffith. The acting was mainly stage acting but it was in the Italian style and thus freer and more individual than most stage acting. It was in that sense more personal and seeing this, Griffith may have gotten his idea to make acting show thought not just emotion.

Spartacus (1913)

Another important feature of these films which is often missed is their use of space - the foreground and background. Prior to this movies happened mainly in a single plain. This is largely true of the stage as well. In these films you can see things happening in both the foreground and background and this gives the films a tremendous sense of depth.

Spartacus (1913)

A lot has been written about the Italian silent epics but one thing that critics seem to miss is how much fun they are. Excessive in nearly every way, it is clear that the actors and the rest of the cast are having a great deal of fun with this, indulging their imaginations and their emotions. They invite us to do the same.
