Kira and Mads have been married for some years when she is put away for two years in a mental institution. The movie begins when she returns to her home, her husband and their two kids. However, she is not fully recovered and doesn't know how to behave in the outside world. She also suspects Mads of having an affair. She causes several scandals, before she gets one final chance to do something right. The question is if their love is strong enough to overcome all these troubles.

Behind the film's somewhat incomplete title, hides a brutally honest story about a marriage in deep crisis. Mads (Lars Mikkelsen) and Kira (Stine Stengade) have been happily married for years and have two sons together, but following a deep depression Kira is admitted to a psychiatric hospital. After six months on the ward she is ready to return to the family and resume her old life as a well-functioning mother and wife. But Kira is far from healed and her mental state repeatedly tests the couple's love for each other.

Kira's deep love for her family means that she is trying hard as she can to regain their trust and to once again be able to follow society's rules. However, despite her best intentions, her mental instability constantly puts her in embarassing situations and creates scandals which her patient husband has to clear up. But he turns out to have secrets of his own as he had an affair with Kira's sister and the question is how much love can take before it breaks.

On the basic level, A Love Story might sound like any other film that focuses on the many aspects of love, but this dogme film exhudes a special psychological realism. Furthermore, the interaction between the two main characters is unique in the portrayal of a couple fighting for love.

As it is a Dogme film, it is of course filmed with a handheld camera which brings a special nearness to the story. At the same time, it complies with the rules of natural lighting and filming on location. With the dogme idea as a strict artistic frame, the film is free to focus on the subject matter: the relevant story and the strong performances. A very powerful film about marriage and relationships between spouses in general. And deep love as well with all its complexity and curves. First of all I don't think that the point is the mental illness. This looks to me like a trick to make the situation more realistic. The same sick situation it would be depicted without an explicitly ill woman (or man). Lets ask ourselves how many times we wonder if our spouse behaves normally or is in the margin of insanity!

The second point is that there is not a bad and a good guy. There is not a one sided responsibility for the problems. They constantly exchange roles. We sympathize them both in their sincere effort to get along, although forces beyond their power (that is why I declare that the trick with the illness works so nice) makes it very difficult. And the third point. Love is not linear and without curves. Their behavior is so different from time to time or at the same time. He is so tender but he rapes her. She is so affectionate but she goes for a one night stand with a stranger. She is so close with the children but she abandons them. And so on. The actors are magnificent (not only the leading roles) the cinematography is excellent, artistically is of very high standards. Highly recommended.IMDB Reviewer
