Le avventure di una donna disonesta, moglie di un bravo impiegato di banca e madre di un grazioso bambino, la quale dopo aver vergognosamente abbandonato la casa una prima volta e dopo aver ottenuto dal marito il perdono, torna a fuggire con il suo amante per la seconda volta, provocando il suicidio del marito che non può rassegnarsi a perderla e lo strazio del povero bimbo il quale guarda, vede, giudica e soffre con la disperazione della sua piccola anima dischiusa per la prima volta al lume della cattiveria umana.

Poco prima del tragico gesto, il padre porta il piccolo in un collegio; in seguito, appresa la notizia della scomparsa del padre, Pricò si trova faccia a faccia con la madre e l'anziana governante, Agnese e saluta con un abbraccio solo quest'ultima, senza rivolgere alcun gesto d'affetto verso l'altra donna. I bambini ci guardano è un film del 1943 diretto da Vittorio De Sica e tratto dal romanzo Pricò di Cesare Giulio Viola. La pellicola è stata giudicata tra i precursori del neorealismo.

As the movie begins the viewer is introduced to Pricò, a young Italian boy who lives with his parents in a middle-class household. His mother, Nina, takes him to a local park where he enjoys his time out while watching a puppet show, but is also concerned with a handsome lover named Roberto (with whom Nina has shared a past romance) courting his mother while he is assumed to not be paying attention.

In his first collaboration with renowned screenwriter and longtime partner Cesare Zavattini, Vittorio De Sica examines the cataclysmic consequences of adult folly on an innocent child. Heralding the pair’s subsequent work on some of the masterpieces of Italian neorealism, The Children Are Watching Us is a vivid, deeply humane portrait of a family’s disintegration.

The film follows the anguish of the four-year-old, Prico, after his mother, Nina, leaves his father, Andrea, for her lover Roberto. Prico is sent to his aunt and then to his grandmother. Nina returns when Prico is sick and vows to give up Roberto, even though he persists in seeing her. The family situation gradually improves until they take a holiday on the Italian Riviera.
