Guido è un giovane ebreo che si trasferisce ad Arezzo con l'amico Ferruccio Papini. Durante il tragitto Guido incontra casualmente una giovane maestra di nome Dora, da lui soprannominata principessa. Arrivato in città, viene ospitato dallo zio Eliseo, capo cameriere dell'albergo più lussuoso della città di Firenze, dove Guido va a lavorare come cameriere.

Quello stesso giorno, in municipio, avviene un litigio con Rodolfo, un arrogante gerarca fascista, ed entrambi da allora si soprannominano lo scemo delle uova perché Guido involontariamente appoggia alcune uova nel cappello del fascista e, quando Rodolfo lo indossa, si rompe le uova in testa diventando furioso.

Intanto, all'hotel, Guido fa amicizia con un medico tedesco appassionato, come lui, di indovinelli. Saputo che un ispettore scolastico dorme nell'hotel, e che costui era stato convocato il giorno dopo in una scuola elementare dove insegna anche Dora per una lezione antropologica a favore della razza ariana, trova uno stratagemma per sostituirsi a costui, pur di incontrarla. Il vero ispettore poi arriva quando già la lezione ha ormai ridicolizzato l'obiettivo iniziale, ma Guido, scappato via dalla finestra, ha comunque raggiunto il suo scopo. Una sera Dora va a teatro; Guido la segue e, con un altro stratagemma, la porta via a Rodolfo. I due quella sera parlano a lungo e Guido le confessa infine il proprio amore per lei.

Qualche sera dopo, proprio al Grand Hotel, Rodolfo è ansioso di festeggiare il fidanzamento ufficiale con Dora, la quale mai è stata veramente innamorata. Dora quindi decide di contraccambiare i sentimenti di Guido e, al termine della serata, va via con lui dopo che questi era entrato nel ristorante su un cavallo bianco, seppur dipinto di verde fluorescente, incurante che sul dorso dell'animale avessero scritto "cavallo ebreo", perché era già incominciata la discriminazione razziale. A Rodolfo non rimane che incappare nell'ennesimo uovo, stavolta un grande uovo di struzzo che rovina sulla sua testa.

English Synopsis
In Italy in 1939, Guido Orefice (Benigni) is a funny and charismatic young Jewish man looking for work in a city. He falls in love with a local school teacher, Dora (portrayed by Benigni's actual wife Nicoletta Braschi), who is to be engaged to a rich but arrogant civil servant. Guido engineers further meetings with her, seizing on coincidental incidents to declare his affection for her, and finally wins her over. He steals her from her engagement party on a horse, humiliating her fiance and mother. Soon they are married and have a son, Giosue (Giorgio Cantarini).

Through the first part, the movie depicts the changing political climate in Italy: Guido frequently imitates members of the National Fascist Party, skewering their racist logic and pseudoscientific reasoning (at one point, jumping onto a table to demonstrate his "perfect Aryan bellybutton"). However, the growing Fascist wave is also evident: the horse Guido steals Dora away on has been painted green and covered in antisemitic insults.

Later in World War II, after Dora and her mother (Marisa Paredes) are reconciled, Guido, his Uncle Eliseo and Joshua are seized on Joshua's birthday, forced onto a train and taken to a concentration camp. Despite being a non-Jew, Dora demands to be on the same train to join her family. In the camp, Guido hides their true situation from his son, convincing him that the camp is a complicated game in which Giosue must perform the tasks Guido gives him, earning him points; the first team to reach one thousand points will win a tank. He tells him that if he cries, complains that he wants his mother, or says that he is hungry, he will lose points, while quiet boys who hide from the camp guards earn extra points.

Recovery Volumes (.rev)
Recovery volumes or .rev files are special files which can be created by WinRAR/RAR and allow you to reconstruct missing and damaged files in a volume set. They can
only be used with multi-volume archives.
This feature may be useful for backups or, for example, when you post a multivolume archive to a newsgroup and some of the subscribers did not receive some files. Reposting recovery volumes instead of usual volumes may reduce the total number of files to repost.
Each recovery volume is able to reconstruct one missing RAR volume. For example, if you have 30 volumes and 3 recovery volumes, you are able to reconstruct any 3 missing volumes. If the number of .rev files is less than a number of missing volumes, reconstructing is impossible. The total number of usual and recovery volumes must not exceed 255 and the number of recovery volumes must be less than the number of RAR volumes.
WinRAR reconstructs missing and damaged volumes either when clicking on .rev file, or when using rc command or automatically, if it cannot locate the next volume and finds the required number of .rev files when unpacking.
You may use the "Recovery volumes" option in the Archive name and parameters dialog or a similar option also appears in the Protect archive command to create recovery volumes. In the command line mode you may do it with -rv switch or rv command.
Original copies of damaged volumes are renamed to *.bad before reconstruction. For example, volname.part03.rar will be renamed to volname.part03.rar.bad.
