Dane DeHaan è Lockhart, giovane e ambizioso broker a Wall Street, mandato dal management della sua società in una località remota sulle Alpi svizzere per riportare a New York Pembroke, l'amministratore delegato della sua azienda, il quale, dopo un lungo soggiorno in un idilliaco e misterioso centro benessere, ha informato il suo staff di non avere alcuna intenzione di andarsene. Quando sembra aver portato a termine il compito, un rovinoso incidente lo costringe a fermarsi qualche giorno al centro con una gamba ingessata. Nonostante il clima tra i pazienti in cura sia sereno, sembra che i trattamenti erogati dal sinistro Dottot Volmer (Jason Isaacs), i cui effetti dovrebbero essere miracolosi, li facciano stare sempre peggio. Lockhart è deciso a indagare più a fondo sulla struttura e scoprirne i segreti più oscuri. Mentra cerca di approfondire i misteri di quel luogo, incontra una ragazza, la bellissima e inquietante Hannah (Mia Goth), anche lei paziente della clinica, e conosce anche un'altra ospite del centro, l'eccentrica Signora Watkins (Celia Imrie), che ha condotto alcune indagini per conto proprio. In breve tempo, il direttore dell'istituto, diagnostica a Lockhart la stessa patologia di cui soffrono gli altri pazienti. Il giovane capisce di essere prigioniero nel ritiro alpino e inizia a perdere il contatto con la realtà. Cosa è vero e cosa non lo è? Non sa più dirlo. Non è nemmeno sicuro che la sua gamba sia davvero rotta… Durante la "cura" è costretto a subire prove inimmaginabili.

Trama
La diciassettenne Rose e la tredicenne Kat si ritrovano da sole nella loro prestigiosa scuola femminile quando le rispettive famiglie non sono in grado di ospitarle per le vacanze invernali. Ben presto, oscure visioni iniziano ad affliggere Kat mentre Rose, impotente, assiste a come le malvagie entità si accaniscano su di lei. Nel frattempo, la bella ma problematica Joan ha una misteriosa missione da portare a termine nello stesso istituto, apparentemente costretta dalle forze del male.
