JEAN-LUC GODARD
HISTOIRE(S) DU CINEMA
INCLUDING 4 DVD
réalisée de 1988 à 1998
264 min

Composed of four chapters, each one divided into two parts: 1a: “All stories”, 1b: “A history alone”, 2a: “Only the cinema”, 2b: “Fatal beauty”, 3a: “the Currency of l' absolute”, 3b: “A vague news”, 4a: “the Control of l' universe” and 4b: “the Signs among us”, Histoire (S) of the cinema is posed from the start like an important work, as well because it revisits a whole century of cinema as because it is registered like a work with whole share in the catalogue of films of Jean-Luc Godard, most mythical and discussed French realizers. At the same time poetic test, diary and lucid lampoon, Histoire (S) of the cinema are before all the reflection d' a memory of film enthusiast and scenario writer which places morals on the same level that the pleasure and can question l' one compared to l' other without letting itself plug by the lights of the apparent beauty. History (S) of the cinema is thus a singular object, not raising neither of the cinematographic anthology nor of the exhaustive history. Godard tells there the cinema and its stories, its own life d' in love with the cinema and the history with the images which fitted forever in the collective memory. One thinks of the way in which Élie Faure approached the plastic works of art in its History of l' art, work d' elsewhere abundantly quoted in the sequence of opening of Pierrot the insane one (1965). In History (S) of the cinema, Jean-Luc Godard at the same time comes from to communicate his feelings as for the beauty of the cinema, to reveal the philosophical stakes and to analyze of them the perverse effects induced by this shape of spectacle. Because of the very personal tone of this work, this one could appear strictly experimental with some, while others saw the expression d' there; a demanding conscience, making with a rare ethical direction the assessment d' one century d' illusions and d' dazzlings. It should be noted that Histoire (S) of the cinema constitutes a legal audacity of size taking into consideration laws on the intellectual property, insofar as Jean-Luc Godard presents very many film extracts to it without to have acquired some the corresponding rights, considering them according to its own terms, like concerning the right of quotation. Diffused on five European television channels, work left out of video box but also in the form of book.
