Blood Diamond is an excellent film, its full of action and drama and you quickly get wrapped up in the storyline. It is a fictional dramatization of true events, but the writers pay enough respect to recent history to lay off the schmalz. This movie doesn’t fall into the usual traps of trying to add in elements that don’t jive with the story, Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio) does not get to kiss the girl in the end and ride off into the sunset. The three main characters, smuggler Danny Archer, fisherman Solomon (Djimon Hounsou) and reporter Maddy (Jennifer Connelly) are wonderfully complex and really punch through the raw emotion that just drips from the film. The on screen chemistry really worked here. I have to say this is probably DiCaprios finest work, even with that accent that sometimes slips a bit. I’ll give him credit though, he really inhabited this tragic character and Afrikaans is a really tough accent to pull off consistently. Archer is a conflicted young man, who in the beginning is only out to enrich himself. He’s like Han Solo, deep down you know he’s a nice guy. Djimon Hounsou also brings in a powerful performance. Now here is one actor who can send a message across to the audience with just one look. We’ll be seeing more of this guy I’m sure. I think his talent is what made DiCaprio have to turn it up a notch just to keep up. Solomon is an unwilling participant in this mess, he is a family man who is trying to carve out a decent life until his village is massacred, his son is snatched and he is forced into a slave diamond mine. He doesn’t give a crap about this monster diamond he finds, he just wants his son and family back. Archer and him form an unwilling relationship, and he knows Danny is just after the stone. Eventually they get a bit closer but not without its bumps. They do have some great dialogue though. “So you’re a fisherman, ha? This 2 disc edition DVD of the film is a good one. The second disc has a lengthy documentary coming back to Sierra Leone to see if anything has changed since 1999. Its a very interesting piece and be warned it is graphic. The other features are shorter mini featurettes on various aspects of the movie itself. DiCaprio talks about his character and how he prepared for the role, Jennifer gives her spiel on women journalists in war zones, and there’s a closer look on the siege of Freetown which is the center piece of the film. Overall I just have nothing but good things to say about this film. I think it was eye opening and that everyone should see it. It will make you wonder about where that diamond ring came from, I know I thought about it. Will this film change the world? Probably not, but at least its a start.
