Two documentaries by French writer and director Emmanuel Carrère. Attempting to lay one ghost to rest by making the journey to Kotelnich, east of Moscow, the director finds he must make a return visit to exorcise other ghosts, discovering other tragedies.
Ce sont trois de ses voyages à Kotelnitch (Russie) que nous raconte l’écrivain-réalisateur Emmanuel Carrère.
Kotelnitch est une ville à 800 km à l'est de Moscou. Dans le premier documentaire (Le Soldat perdu), commandé par Envoyé Spécial et Télérama, Emmanuel Carrère est allé sur les traces d'un prisonnier de guerre hongrois devenu fou, qui avait passé 55 ans, oublié de tous, dans un hôpital psychiatrique à Kotelnitch.
Pour le second (Retour à Kotelnitch), il y est retourné une seconde fois faire ce qu'il croyait être un film documentaire sur un personnage trouble rencontré lors du premier tournage : Ania, jeune mythomane acoquinée avec un certain Sacha du FSB (ex-KGB). Il retrouve les personnes rencontrées la première fois, mais rentre en France désappointé. Il apprend alors l'assassinat sordide d'Ania. Il retourne à Kotelnitch une troisième fois pour l'anniversaire de sa mort, quarante jours après son terrible assassinat à la hache et celui de son jeune fils. Il se rend compte alors que ces trois tournages, étalés sur deux ans, racontent une histoire, et que cette histoire est la sienne.
Ces premiers films d'Emmanuel Carrère, écrivain, réalisateur en 2005 de "La Moustache", nous présentent un fascinant et inquiétant portrait de la Russie d'aujourd'hui.
