Ali Auger was born in the UK and grew up in California, England and Italy. At the age of twelve, whilst in Milan pursuing her education, she found some recordings by Maria Callas and began to learn and sing along with them. She asked her father, Brian, to send her tapes of great singers for her to practise with. Brian sent her selections by Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne, Aretha Franklin, Donny Hathaway and many others. Ali fell in love with "The Divine One", Sarah Vaughan. Soft & Furry is Ali's first solo recording. Enjoy this tremendous new voice on the Jazz horizon.

In the midst of her successful run of '50s solo discs, singer June Christy teamed up with ex-boss Stan Kenton for this fine collection of duet sides. Kenton exercises unexpected restraint throughout, shading Christy's dramatically cool delivery with snatches of Ellington color and chamber music formality. For her part, Christy doesn't miss a step shifting from Pete Rugolo's lushly provocative charts on the Something Cool and Misty Miss Christy sessions to this intimate setting. With her soaring tone and crisp phrasing, she manages to both dominate the proceedings and mesh nicely with Kenton's sophisticated backing. The mood is autumnal and keeps with Christy's many big band ballads: tenderness with a hint of the forlorn. Highlights include "Angel Eyes," "How Long Has This Been Going On," and "Come to the Party." Not the disc for the first-timers to get, but still a very solid collection for the faithful fan. ~ AllMusic Review by Stephen Cook

June Christy was one of the best singers to follow in the wake of Anita O'Day, and while her career wasn't always the smoothest, she maintained a very special poise and exhibited a consistent creative and artistic integrity throughout. This set collects some of her greatest ballads, including "Nobody's Heart" and "Interlude," plus the first stereo versions of songs from her classic Something Cool album, cuts from her holiday album This Time of Year, plus material that she did with her husband, Bob Cooper. It's not the whole story, of course, but at 16 well-chosen tracks on a single disc, it's the best brief survey of Christy's career currently out there. ~ AllMusic Review by Steve Leggett

A World of Great Invention. The word ‘invention’ refers not just to ‘inventions’, but to the act of being inventive. By the end of the Victorian era the world had become interconnected by technologies in a way that would have been unimaginable in the previous century. This album takes a musical look at the question “what did the Victorians do for us?” The eight songs consider a selection of inventions and the changes these brought about in the day-to-day lives of ordinary people. There are songs about the affordable daily newspaper; the postage stamp; the bicycle; the department store; portrait photography; the demise of the tea clippers; the industrialization of farming; and indoor domestic lighting.

"You know, hyenas aren't the bad ones… These days it's humans you should fear." Erik K Skodvin's first solo film score evokes otherwordly dreamscapes that capture the atmosphere of the film Anbessa (2019), shot in Ethiopia by director Mo Scarpelli. As a "creative" documentary the film follows Asalif, a 10 year old imaginative boy caught between the ancient and the new, navigating modernization on his own terms. Asalif tries to make sense of things while living in a shed on the outskirts of Addis Ababa with his mom. A place where capitalism and “progress” is closing in on all fronts, and threatening their lifestyle. By becoming a lion (anbessa) he can fight back against the forces outside of his control.

This is the fifth album by Polish (of Greek origins) guitarist / drummer / composer Apostolis Anthimos, mostly familiar as the lead guitarist of the legendary Polish power trio SBB, but also active in other music fields, as this album's title perhaps suggests. On this album Anthimos plays guitar and drums and is accompanied by bassist Robert Szewczuga, keyboardist Piotr Matusik and saxophonist Olaf Węgier. A couple of vocalists appear as guests on one track each. The album presents fourteen original compositions, presumably all by Anthimos, since nothing is explicitly stated on the album's artwork.

Pianist Allen Farnham shows off many of his influences during this fine Concord CD. On John Coltrane's "Fifth House" (which oddly mixes together chord changes relating to both "What Is This Thing Called Love" and "Giant Steps"), Farnham sounds heavily influenced by McCoy Tyner. But on a Latin romp through "You Stepped Out Of A Dream," his hyper chordings remind one of Bobby Enriquez, he is closer to Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock on the obscure Duke Pearson ballad "You Know I Care" and is reminiscent of Keith Jarrett on the folkish "Colin."

Algerian born pianist Solal and American expatriate tenor saxophonist Griffin are perfectly matched in this series of duets, brilliant beyond compare and witty to the nth degree. Both are in their seventies and playing better than ever. Griffin has everything going for him in terms of experience, restraint, emotional depth, and potential explosiveness. Solal, an unsung hero in jazz, shows the years that have passed did not sour him on concepts of stark romanticism, improvisational risk taking, or fear of cutting loose; he clearly can do it all.

Digitally remastered edition of this 1966 album from the Jazz legend. On this album, Kenny's guitar is embellished beautifully by Richard Wyands, piano; Martin Rivera, bass; AND Oliver Jackson, drums. It is an album that is indicative of all that is good about Mr. Burrell. The word 'versatile' is over-used in describing musicians and entertainers but Kenny's playing is both distinctive and varied. He has a beautiful lyrics sense-dig the unaccompanied "People", but he also has an aggressive style of playing that makes his sound easily recognizable. The outstanding characteristics of his playing-his best-known trait-is an honest and soulful blues feeling… a feeling so fresh and distinctive that the Kenny Burrell sound could almost be patented.
