Billy Tibbals - Nightlife Stories (2024) [Official Digital Download 24/96]

With his second EP, Nightlife Stories, 22-year-old Billy Tibbals offers a set of songs with echoes of classic glam and glitter, the elegant stomp of T. Rex, Sparks, ‘70s David Bowie, filtered through a wide range of modern influences and attitudes. As Tibbals elaborates, “To me, it's just my life—it doesn't feel like I'm reviving anything, it's just what naturally comes out when I write songs.”

The record builds on his debut, 2023’s Stay Teenage, capturing the spirit of a once-again-burgeoning LA rock scene. “I wanted it to be a more fast-paced, lively, more raucous album than the previous one, which was quite sweet, really,” says Tibbals. “I wanted to make something a little more aggressive. It's called Nightlife Stories, and so it's about seedy creatures of the night.”

The EP was produced by Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes, who says "Billy has the rock & roll dream in his eyes, stardust in his hands, a head full of music, and the dance floor at his feet."

Tibbals was born and raised in London, before at age 11, his family moved to Los Angeles. He started writing songs in High School—“singing songs into my iPhone and then figuring out how to play piano and guitar well enough so that I could get the songs that I had in my head down.”

He believes that his background gives his music a unique point of view. “There's definitely a combined sensibility that I have, with the English and American influence,” he says. “All those things seeped into me, as far as television and film and music I was hearing as a kid in England, and then being a teenager in LA and having jobs in movie theaters and record shops. And since I also grew up with the internet, there's even more that young artists can access now, so it's kind of an overload of influences.”
