GENUIN and SCHOLA HEIDELBERG present world premiere recordings on a new album featuring works by the internationally awarded composer Dániel Péter Biró, who teaches in Norway. The elite Heidelberg choir and the ensemble aisthesis, specializing in contemporary music, acquaint us with Biró’s imaginative and multi-layered music, which reflects the thought-world of the eminent Dutch-Jewish philosopher Baruch Spinoza in sound and pours it into new contexts. When Markus stayed with us for a week, after one of his tours got cancelled, we improvised together for hours each day. We recorded our experiments, and we puzzled over the hovering nocturnal mood of our explorations. Of course we were channeling the situation of our lives and of the world, perhaps a dissonance between the realms of comfort and distress, distance from family or a larger distance from our hopes for the human herd. As artists, we take a shamanic path, and we trend toward the outlying regions of cognition. Our musical mood during these sessions reminded me of the books by Peter Kingsley, about pre-Socratic mystics Parmenides and Empedocles, who’s meditative approach of “incubation” planted a more earthy and subterranean core to ancient European philosophy. Consider this musical excursion as subterranean, seeking balance inside of dark silence. Markus and I share a deep friendship based on searching, questioning, practice, and a sort of alchemical process of creating things that never existed before, from within our life journeys.

On November 7, 2025, the Belgian label Sdban Records will release a reissue of the mythical Open Sky Unit (1974) by the eponymous jazz fusion group featuring Micheline and Jacques Pelzer, Steve Houben, Ron Wilson, Janot Buchem and Michel Graillier. The album returns on vinyl, highlighting a pivotal moment in Belgian jazz history, where soul, funk, and free improvisation came together in a vibrant and family-driven project.

Luciferian Towers is the perfect name for a Godspeed You! Black Emperor album, matched only, perhaps, by the title of its 2000 classic Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven. In a way, this new one - the band’s third since reuniting in 2011 - feels like a bookend to Lift, in that it’s similarly powerful, but far more sinister.
