"Fairytale"—a word that holds so much more than just a story. It is an entry into another world, a place where fantasy and reality merge, and where time ceases to exist. Music has that same magical power. It carries us to places unknown, into emotions beyond words. When we listen, we open doors to beauty, poetry, and drama—spaces where imagination runs free. On this CD, Yi-jia Yin and I have gathered works that each carry a sense of the fairytale—pieces that invite us into musical storytelling. The title piece, Janáček’s Fairytale, is inspired by the Russian tale of Tsar Berendey. It sings with Janáček’s distinctive melodic turns, unexpected harmonies, and vivid colors, as if whispering an ancient story. The music feels like a conversation, the cello and piano weaving together a scene from a lost world.

Yoko Ono's catalog isn't easy to navigate or even define at times. Even when John Lennon was on board as a collaborator – band member, producer or cheerleader – her music could be willfully difficult and stubbornly uncommercial. She's a singular artist, maybe more so than her late husband and his famous band, which makes any tribute to her vast recorded work an uphill charge not exactly suited for the easily intimidated.

The Modern Jazz Quartet—pianist John Lewis, vibraphonist Milt "Bags" Jackson, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Connie Kay—stood as paragons of elegance in jazz. The musical arrangements, created by Joseph Kuhn, paint an aural portrait of Paris, focusing on romantic and scenic locations such as Montmartre, the Champs Élysées, and the Seine. The album, produced under the direction of D. L. Miller, features orchestral interpretations of famous French tunes ("I Love Paris," "La Mer," "Autumn Leaves"), as well as original compositions by Kuhn, such as "Champs Élysées Café." The original album cover art was created by Joseph Krush.

For jazz fans, Kazumi Watanabe hardly needs any introduction. One of the most popular and well-respected musicians, he is also one of the best known. Since the age of 18 when he first started playing professionally, he has evolved a strong, intense style of jazz guitar with impact and creativity. He is a guitarists' guitarist. After taking Tokyo by storm in his 20s, he toured and traveled extensively, recording many of his finest work with American musicians, as well as with many long-term Japanese colleagues.

Scheen Jazzorkester (SJO) had its first concert in Skien in February 2010, with an 18-member big band lineup, including a majority of professional musicians based in the Grenland area.

Kazumi Watanabe is one of the finest jazz guitarists to emerge out of Japan. A household name in the world of jazz fusion fans, Guitar Renaissance is the third and the final release of the trilogy. Only four of the fifteen tracks are pop-, jazz- or classical compositions. Most of the six Watanabe originals are in the Spanish style, too. On two tracks he is accompanied by clarinet or another guitar, the rest is solo Watanabe at his best.
