    En ful historia (1862) är en satirisk fars där författaren ekiperar en gentleman från de högre klasserna med tidens fashionabla liberala idéer – idéer som dock inte sitter djupare än att det blir helt fel när han ska använda dem i det praktiska umgänget med de ofrälse: På väg hem efter en blöt kväll med ett par kollegor stöter Ivan Iljítsj Pralinskij på en av sina underordnade som just har gift sig och håller bröllopsfest. Ivan, som är lite rund under fötterna och ivrig att visa sin liberala välvilja mot sina lägre stående medborgare, beslutar att bjuda in sig själv till festen, där han till sitt senare bittra missnöje forsätter sitt intag av starkvaror. Hans alltmer desperata försök att vinna festdeltagarnas beundran misslyckas helt och Ivan framstår mot sin vilja som löjlig, pinsam och oförskämd.
