    Hyeonseo Lee växte upp under Nordkoreas brutala kommunistregim. Efter 1990-talets hungersnöd i landet började hon tvivla på propagandan och insåg att hon blivit hjärntvättad i hela sitt liv. När hon var sjutton år beslutade hon sig för att fly till Kina. Lee kunde inte återvända hem eftersom hon och hennes familj riskerade fångenskap, tortyr och offentlig avrättning.
