    I slutet på 50-talet trampar en ung man som en galning för att hinna i tid till gruvan i belgiska Villette. Han hör dånet, han ser räddningsmanskapet rusa till, han inser att han har en chans att försvinna, han skulle ha varit därnere med de andra, alla kommer att tro att han är död. Många år senare hittas en ung journalist mördad i en malmlast på en pråm i Villette. I handen har journalisten ett fragment av ett tidningsklipp, ett spår som leder till gruvorten Hanaberget i svenska Bergslagen. Kommunalrådet Birgitta Matsson har just varit med om att gruvan i Hanaberget stängts och sista lasten skeppats iväg till Belgien. Hon reser till Bryssel.
