    Questo romanzo, scritto nel 1851, è considerato il primo "noir" italiano. L'autore, scrittore fertile di romanzi di appendice e precursore del verismo, fu il più popolare degli scrittori napoletani.

    La Serao lo ricorda come "precursore della narativa di denuncia"; Benedetto Croce lo definisce "letto da tutti fuorchè dalla gente letterata", e invita gli studiosi italiani ad occuparsi di lui, sia per il suo interesse storico che linguistico, che per la sua prosa elegante e ricercata, e originale.
