+ The Torch #1

is an eight-issue miniseries commissioned as a pseudo-sequel of sorts to Avengers/Invaders for Marvel Comics for its 70th anniversary. It is a thoughtful and intimate look at a classic Marvel character, the original World War II Torch. Writer Mike Carey fleshes his characters with definition and care, with detailed artwork by Patrick Berkenkotter, drawing the title character in the Golden Age style. The second issue reinforces the retro feel despite the story's present setting, and explores the relationship between The Torch and his sidekick Toro with surprising depth through dialogue that simultaneously propels the story development forward. Intelligent, thoughtful and with a pace that starts to pick up speed, this one I recommend.
The resurrection of the Torch! The Mad Thinker proceeds with his investigation into the Jim Hammond's nature and origin, in order to rebuild him and put him in the service of A.I.M. But the Thinker's true goals go far beyond his brief, and in his hands, all knowledge is power. Story by Mike Carey, Alex Ross; Art by Patrick Berkenkotter; Letters by Todd Klein; Cover by Alex Ross --
