Description

This course explores the board practices and leadership roles that cultivate a more effective and more engaged Board of Directors. Many organizations have a Board of Directors appointed by a group of stakeholders to represent the collective or specific interests; however, a common challenge is making the Board of Directors an asset of the organization and not extra expense. A highly effective Board of Directors can be another point of competitive advantage for an organization to help it stand out amongst its peers. In this course, you will learn about four co‑operative board leadership roles that are shared between executives and directors and are essential for achieving governance excellence. We will explore how these roles contribute to stronger decision-making, improved accountability, and a more effective board‑management dynamic. The course will apply these four leadership roles in two critical contexts that all boards encounter: strategic management and risk oversight. These areas will highlight opportunities for management teams to engage more effectively with their boards, drawing on the expertise and experience of directors to strengthen organizational outcomes. At the same time, participants in a director role will gain practical ideas for working with management in a way that both fulfills their fiduciary responsibilities and adds meaningful insight to guide the organization’s direction.
