Mastering MODSIM: Guided Practice Exercises

What you'll learn
- Apply MODSIM concepts to real-world reservoir operations through guided, practical exercises.
- Practice building complete models by combining multiple concepts from individual lessons.
- Strengthen your understanding of reservoir simulation through step-by-step project builds.
- Explore troubleshooting techniques to identify and resolve common modeling issues.
- Develop hands-on skills by setting up rules, inflows, and routing in working examples.
- Gain confidence applying MODSIM tools to realistic water management scenarios.
- Reinforce your learning with exercises that connect theory to practical applications.
- Prepare to design and run your own independent simulations after course completion.

Requirements
- This course is intended to be a companion course to accompany the MODSIM Lessons course. Rather than cover each topic one at a time, these exercises provide full working examples of building and running a working MODSIM model from scratch, which will combine a number of the topics covered in the MODSIM Lessons videos.

Description
** All videos are downloadable **

Put your MODSIM knowledge into practice with this hands-on exercise series, designed to complement and extend the concepts covered in the MODSIM Lessons course. In this companion course, you’ll move beyond individual features and work through complete water resources modeling scenarios that integrate multiple tools and extensions into fully functioning river basin system models. Each exercise emphasizes applying key concepts in a practical workflow—building, running, and interpreting simulations that mirror real-world water allocation and management challenges.

You’ll configure complex networks with reservoirs, demand nodes, multilinks, and routing options; set up hydropower operations including high-head, run-of-river, and pumped storage systems; and incorporate advanced allocation mechanisms such as exchanges, rent pools, and storage rights. Exercises also introduce extensions like irrigation return flow, pumping stream depletion, and water rights administration, providing the tools to model basin-scale decision-making and constraints.

Beyond network building, you’ll practice scenario analysis, exceedance probability evaluation, and statistical methods for comparing management strategies under uncertainty. Exercises also cover custom runs, back routing, and the use of time series data, giving you the flexibility to replicate both historical and projected hydrologic conditions.

As with the lessons course, you’ll use MODSIM’s visualization and reporting tools to explore results, but these exercises focus on integration, problem-solving, and system-wide performance evaluation. By the end of the course, you’ll have completed a series of comprehensive MODSIM exercises and gained the confidence to apply your skills to consulting projects, agency decision-making, and research applications. Completion of the MODSIM Lessons course is recommended, but not required, especially for users with prior modeling experience.

Who this course is for:
- This course is ideal for beginners new to water systems modeling, professionals looking to expand their skills in MODSIM, and experienced users seeking a practical refresher on both basic and advanced topics.
