Periodically, plaintive exclamations about the death of romance are heard, but the noble art of dressing love, imagination and longing in words and tone never becomes unfashionable and lives to the highest degree. Ever since the romantics of the early 19th century realized that the combination of voice and piano provides endless opportunities to create great human dramas in small format, it has continued for generation after generation. The old romantics are still sung, and in each epoch a new one is created, which is partly based on tradition, but also influenced by the stylistic trends of the time and current genres. When Ivonne Fuchs and Anna Christensson decided to commission new music, Thomas Jennefelt was the obvious choice. For several decades, Thomas has been one of Sweden's foremost vocal composers with deep insights into the possibilities of the voice, text processing and the interaction between the two instruments. He is deeply rooted in tradition and knows his predecessors well, but also today's Art-Musical and popular genres, and his tonal language always sounds New, completely personal and places the music confidently in our own time. When Thomas received the request from Ivonne and Anna, he had recently been strongly touched at a concert by a large, emotional song by the late Romantic composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold, and decided to search for expressionist texts from the same time, i.e. a bit into the 20th century, and when he began to read Else Lasker-Schüler's intensely burning and self-revealing love poem, he knew that he had found what he was looking for.
