The story of archaeology is often about what happens when vastly different cultures meet. In this issue, you will read about what happened when a group of merchants came to Egypt at the invitation of the pharaoh. These people, known as the Hyksos, eventually ruled over all of Egypt for about 100 years, changing the course of Egyptian history. You will also learn what transpired when two very different cultures—the Inuit and Basques—met each other on the shores of southeastern Canada in the 17th century and how their surprising interactions left their mark on the landscape. Follow the path of a ship that sailed from the heart of the Byzantine Empire carrying an unusual cargo of marble objects intended to decorate a church, visit an 18th-century English coffeeshop where people mostly drank tea, and marvel at the incredible discovery of fragments of ancient Mesoamerican sacred texts found hidden in the pages of a 17th-century manuscript. In these stories—and so many more—this issue of Archaeology brings the past to life.
