While modern engines are more or less hermetically sealed units, often requiring little to no active maintenance, users still need to be mindful of the fact that filters – specifically air, oil and fuel filters – play a critical role in the smooth functioning of high-tech engines. Airborne dirt and dust particles, despite their microscopic size, can be very abrasive and really hurt performance if allowed to sneak into an engine. The same happens with oil degradation, when soot particles and other contaminants can cause big harm to an engine. The solution is, of course, the use of high quality air and oil filters, along with scheduled replacement at OEM-specified intervals. Manufacturers are doing their bit to help and are using newer, more advanced materials to produce longer-lasting automotive filters that offer better protection than ever before. Here, we provide an in-depth look at cutting-edge developments that are taking place in the area of automotive filters.
