Summer is here at last and freshwater anglers can look forward to a brand-new series, “Start at the beginning …”, by Andries Maree in which he discusses the most common fish species and gives advice on how to catch them. Sometimes anglers are having such a great time at the water that they forget about the sun and heat. Contributor Danie Engelbrecht provides useful tips on how to prevent dehydration.
The ever-popular TV angling programme, Hier Gaan Ons Alweer! will start again on 3 October at 17:30 on kykNET, channel 144. This is the 15th series and with the weak economy, the team will be focusing on affordable angling venues both locally and abroad.
As far as product news goes, we bring you Daiwa’s new BG spinning reels and Energizer’s new tough, free-standing Hard Case LED Work Light. In August our contributors Henriëtte Lubbe, Frik van Zyl and Chris Nolan visited the annual South African Fishing Tackle Agents and Distributors (SAFTAD) show in Johannesburg and they report back on the latest exciting products and fishing tackle on the market. They also bring some good news, namely that manufacturers are looking at reducing prices on their new products.
October is the official start of the new fly-fishing season on the Vaal River for the amazing smallmouth yellowfish and in his regular column Rohan Koegelenberg writes about the best fly selection for this species.
Moving to the coast, Gareth Coombs looks at sinker shapes for rock and surf angling and we bring you the results of the annual George Galjoen Derby.
Catch and release is always promoted as a good conservation practice but Bernard Venter explains that this is not necessarily always the case in “Catch and release: Yes or no?”.
All this and much more in this month’s issue of Stywe Lyne / Tight Lines – the angler’s friend.
