TURTLE BEACH
Maui Island in Hawaii is home to five out of the seven species of sea turtle, including the majestic green species. Fittingly, one of the best locations to watch them is in the waters that lap the shores next to South Maui Turtle Town. The best time to visit is between April and October, and while they are usually spotted grazing on algae or resting on the seafloor, you may be lucky enough to see one catching some rays on the beach. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous why not escape to Akumal in Mexico for the chance of an encounter with a loggerhead turtle? Named for their shell-crushing jaws, loggerheads are nature’s great recyclers. They feed on clams and sea urchins, crunching through their skeletons and returning the minerals back to the sea. You can book snorkel tours from the beach and swim out into the ocean to watch them eat.
