David Munrow was a major British music historian who started The Early Music Consort of London with Christopher Hogwood. Monroe also published a number scholarly works on Early Music. One of Munrow's early passions was the study of early musical instruments which he collected until this his death, and are now part of his historical archives. Monroe began a project to make recordings of musical instruments from the Medieval and Renaissance Periods during 1973-74. Munrow was himself was a respected musician in own right on the instruments of the period, and played many of the included examples himself.
After producing these recordings, Monroe started to compile a history based on his previous extended research.
The results of that research were a 90 page illustrated volume entitled "Instruments of the Middle Ages and Renaissance (1976). Some of these initial volumes were issued with the accompanying musical recordings.
The current 2 CD set consists of: CD1: Instruments of the MIddle Ages with 30 audio examples of Instruments of Medieval musical instruments with period music. CD2 has 31 audio examples of Instruments of the Renaissance playing Renaissance music. All examples were recorded by members of The Early Music Consort of London under David Munrow. Many of the actual example were recorded by, or with David Munrow.
