This box set gathers together Karl Richter's stereo recordings of Bach's choral works that were recorded between 1959-1969. Missing is his final, digital St Matt, the 1961 Mass in B Minor (the 1969 "from Japan" recording is included) and an earlier mono Christmas Oratorio (available on Teldec CDs).
This box would be a great bargain if it included only the Christmas Oratorio, because the recording included is certainly one of the greatest ever set down. Even after 50 years in the catalog, it remains the standard by which all others are inevitably judged, principally due to the fine set of vocal soloists, the expert playing of the orchestra, the alert and colorful singing of the choir, and Richter's spot-on interpretation.
But there's more here than that, much more, as the Passions and the Mass in B Minor are major edifices in the classical music repertoire and they receive dedicated performances here.
If you're tired of the fleet, bland sameness of the myriad recordings being shoved into the pipeline by the HIP crowd, try this. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
