Review:
One can't really tell, why certain musicians, despite the obvious quality, do not make it onto the big stage. Nicolas Simion is a case in point. Arguably, one of the finest and most original reed players out there, his popularity seems restricted to Germany, Austria and his homeland Romania. This is his debut album for the german Tutu label, and it imediately established him in Germany. It is difficult to categorize the music. "Jazz goes Béla Bartók" is written in the liner notes, and this might give you a feel for it. However, it is also misleading, because it not a third-stream, jazz-meets-classical album. It is avantgarde, post-bop jazz. Highly original and certainly worth every penny you spend on it. (by me :P)
NOTE: If you listen to the files on the PC, you need to de-emphasize them. For foobar 0.9 please download these two files foo_convolve and ImpulsEmph.wav into the components folder of your foobar installation.
Open foobar, go to "Preferences", select "DSP Manager", move Convolver into "Active DSP", click on "Configure Selected", and load the ImpulsEmph as "Impulse File". Save and you are ready to go. Note: You need to de-activate the Convolver once you want to listen files without pre-emphasis
