Following the critical success of her Haydn/Mozart series Claire-Marie le Guay concentrates her new recording on the Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina. This portrait features the beautiful piano works Invention (1974), Chaconne (1963), Musical Toys (1969) and Introitus (1978), a chamber concerto with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra conducted by Jean-Jacques Kantorow.
This unusual and interesting CD focuses on the music Sofia Gubaidulina was composing in her relatively early years. Anyone convinced that something has been lost in the rather rambling solemnity of some of her more recent works should enjoy it.
In the earliest piece, the Chaconne from 1963, a strong personality and clarity of focus are there in abundance. There are also touches of neo-classicism, with a bite to the harmony and a rhythmic energy quite distinct from what her near-contemporary Alfred Schnittke was doing around this time, and the music is quite free of any “anxiety of influence” where the mighty Shostakovich is concerned.
The collection of 14 short pieces called Musical Toys from 1969 is even better: a magical sequence for children to enjoy, if not to perform, which suffers not at all from comparison with more celebrated sets of miniatures by Bartók or Kurtág. The combination of technically imaginative writing and sly stylistic allusions – Debussy one minute, Prokofiev the next – is no less beguiling than Gubaidulina’s ability to switch between rugged humour and unaffected expressiveness in an instant.
Musical Toys, together with a tiny Invention from 1974, confirm Gubaidulina’s virtues in the crafting of musical epigrams. Introitus (1978) foreshadows her later work – an expansive single-movement structure, lasting just over 20 minutes, and initially meditative in tone, though the second half (with some hints of an appreciation of Arvo Pärt’s “tintinnabular” style) becomes much less static and monolithic as it proceeds. Claire-Marie Le Guay plays admirably thoughout, lively without dryness, alert to all the many shifts of mood, and is excellently recorded: a disc to treasure.
