Audio Hertz VHS v1.0.0 | 52.6 Mb

The sound of forgotten home movies, reimagined for your DAW. A digital audio workstation screen displays a plugin interface designed to look like a retro VHS player. The plugin has controls labeled 'Preamp,' 'Wow,' 'Flutter,' 'Noise,' and more, with waveforms and multitrack recordings visible in the background.

Audio Hertz VHS Home Video Flavor Box authentically captures the sonic fingerprint of real VHS playback. Gritty flavorful saturation, limited dynamics, and an unmistakably, era-specific tone, paired with the subtle noise and mechanical quirks that defined the sound of home video.

Modeled from two actual consumer VCRs, each with its own personality and sonic character:

✓ 1979 JVC Vidstar HR-7600U — One of the earliest home VCRs ever made. Heavy, noisy, and built like a tank. When driven, it delivers a surprisingly smooth distortion with a unique bass boost.
✓ 2001 Panasonic PV-V4521 — My actual childhood VCR, used to record late-night TV and bad movies off cable. Driven hard, it produces an extremely flavorful, gritty overdrive.

A vintage JVC HR-6700U VCR sits on a wooden desk, lit by dramatic red and blue lighting. A hand reaches to insert a VHS tape labeled 'Audio Hertz,' while another Scotch-branded VHS tape rests on top of the machine.

The result is a plugin that instantly brings you back to the beautifully nostalgic, imperfect world of analog home video. But it’s more than just a time machine, you can push these decks far beyond their original purpose unlocking entirely new tones: gritty, overdriven textures, unexpected harmonics, and character-rich saturation that goes well beyond standard VHS flavor. It’s both a faithful emulation and a creative sound design tool.

Developed in collaboration with audiosingularity, VHS combines the soul of real VCRs with powerful, modern DSP to bring their quirks, flaws, and charm to life inside your DAW.

One-Click Nostalgia. Fully Tweakable.

VHS audio was never designed for fidelity, it was a workaround driven by the physical constraints of video tape. By squeezing sound onto the edges of the tape and relying on fixed playback heads, the format introduced tonal imbalances, background noise, and mechanical quirks. Those “flaws” are exactly what give it its unmistakable charm.

✓ VCR Saturation
✓ We pushed the inputs of real consumer VCRs to capture the unique distortion they produce when overloaded. Something never intended by design, but rich with sonic potential.
✓ Built-In Limiter
✓ Fully adjustable. Emulates VCR-style limiting to deliver those squashed dynamics you remember.
✓ 8-Band Graphic EQ
✓ Sculpt your sound with precision. Clean up the grit, carve space, or push the VHS flavor even further.
✓ Noise, Wow & Flutter
✓ Dial in texture, movement and wear to match your track. Add noise or extreme wow and flutter for creative character.

A close-up of a VHS tape inserted into a classic video cassette recorder, with the tape labeled 'Audio Hertz.' A vintage Scotch VHS tape box with bold stripes and a red-orange orb sits diagonally across the VCR.

Looks Like a VCR. Sounds Like a Memory.

This isn’t just a plugin, it’s a digital VCR in your DAW.

The interface looks and feels like a real tape deck, with satisfying controls and an intuitive layout that invites exploration. It’s designed to be fast, fun, and inspiring. No bloated menus, no learning curve.

Whether you’re crushing a clean vocal, adding character to a drum loop, or turning a synth into a sci-fi pad, VHS makes it effortless.
