Windows Server 2003 - Workstation Hacks

I was thinking of installing Windows 2003 Server for use as a personal computer, and discovered that out of the box it was unsuited for this and needed some tweaking to make it viable. The files I have collected in this zip should be of use in this task. Why use Server? Apparently it's more stable, runs games with better framerates than XP, and you have the satisfaction of using an exotic OS.

InformationOnUsingAsWorkstation: Read this first to understand what needs to be done

NLite1.4 : This lets you remove unnecessary components prior to install, and creates a stripped down ISO. Also works with XP

Win2003AutomatedWorkstationConfigurator: This app does a lot of the tweaking automatically, activating sound and directX for instance

Server2003CorporateSP2WorkstationFix: As the name suggests, this is only for the Corporate version of Server with SP2. It replaces the Logon module, which tricks apps into thinking that you are running Windows XP. This is needed because a few apps (PhotoShop, Doom 3, PerfectDiskWorkstation ) refuse to install if they detect you using Server 2003.

Tweaks&Addons: The most important here is AddSystemRestore.zip . Server 2003 lacks the rollback features of XP, but with this fix and a CD of XP on hand you can add System Restore to Server 03.

ExtraApps: The latest TweakUI, adds a Command prompt to the right click menu, and the online setup module for DirectX.
