Nach der Verurteilung wegen Mordes an ihrem Ehemann kommt Bea Smith (Danielle Cormack) ins berüchtigte Frauengefängnis Wentworth. In der beklemmenden Haftanstalt herrschen harsche Zustände, denn die Direktorin Meg Jackson (Catherine McClements) macht sich durchaus gerne die Insassen und deren Machtkämpfe zunutze, um die Kontrolle zu behalten. So muss sich Bea schnell akklimatisieren, um nicht unter die Räder zu kommen. Besonders schwer fällt ihr allerdings, dass sie durch die Gefängnismauern von ihrer Tochter getrennt ist.
