An IMDb Review: Heroes, Villains, Swordfights and a Perennial Lesson About Corruption in High Places
'13 Assassins', a tale of 19th century samurai, is a quite traditional film. There are heroes, villains, sword-fights and tale of corruption in high places. The samurai make a virtue of necessity and choose to live dutifully, fight all out and die honorably. Basically the dying part has already been decided for the samurai. The plot centers around the assassination of the half brother of the shogun who is an absolutely debased individual and who is leading Japan towards war. Here the tale is at it's weakest. Why the shogun would choose such a warped individual with no apparent talent for high position is unclear. The shogun choosing such a debased individual is believable but the shogun choosing both a talentless and debased individual is a stretch. '13 Assassins' is structured a lot like 'The Seven Samurai', and in both films a small group of samurai fight a much larger group in a small hamlet. '13 Assassins' falls short of 'The Seven Samurai', for example, in the characterizations and the way traps are set in the hamlet, but 'The Seven Samurai' is at such great heights that a film far below 'The Seven Samurai' can still be an excellent film and '13 Assassins' is an excellent film. Though '13 Assassins' is no way path-breaking it is a film the director can be proud of. '13 Assassins' maintains the cultural infrastructure with it's tale of duty, bravery, sacrifice and the dangers of corruption in high places. Art should always be non-representational and clearly '13 Assassins' is set in a world apart which is at it should be. All in all '13 Assassins' is highly recommended.

Note: The Blu-ray version is longer than HDTV version. So enjoy the extra length:)
