Annychka (1968)

A romantic melodrama set during the Second World War that follows the clandestine relationship between a young Hutsul girl and a wounded, Soviet guerrilla, lost in enemy territory. The film plays out during the German occupation of Western Ukraine and is backgrounded by the complex, political interplay between the various inhabitants, officials, collaborators and invaders in the region. The work's vivid depicition of its Carpathian locale and Hutsul folk culture provides a riveting setting in which the story unfolds. Beautifully shot and tremendously well acted, Annychka is truly one of best kept secrets of Ukrainian cinema.
