Ansatsu / The Assassination / L'Assassinat (1964)

The story of Assassination begins with the events of 1853 when "four black ships" - the foreign steamboats of Commander Matthew Perry - anchored at Edo Bay, sparking civil unrest and the major political maneuvering that saw the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate. At a time when assassination had become a disturbing political tool, Shinoda's film follows Hachiro Kiyokawa (Tetsuro Tamba), an ambitious, masterless samurai whose allegiances drift dangerously between the Shogunate and the Emperor.

Japon, 1863 : la guerre civile gronde depuis que les deux pouvoirs constitués, le Shogunat et la Cour impériale, s'opposent violemment sur la politique à adopter face à la menace américaine. Matsudaïra, ministre du Shogun, rencontre un jour Hachiro Kiyokawa, samouraï d'origine paysanne, dont l'intelligence et le talent au sabre le subjuguent. Il décide de le recruter pour former une brigade spéciale de sécurité. Mais Kiyokawa use de son charisme pour lever une véritable armée; et ses ambitions commencent à inquiéter Matsudaïra…
