Vienna during the fin de siecle. Farmer's daughter Anuschka has to sell the farm after her father's death to the rich but mean farmer's wife Nowarek and her friendly son Jaro. Anuschka goes to Vienna and starts to work as a housemaid until she is wrongly accused of theft. In order to restore her dignity she seeks for help plus suddenly Jaro appears to help her and so on and so forth..

Finally watched this. Very hard to classify: the first 15 minutes or so it seems we get Käutner's take on the Heimatfilm genre (and a very well made one), but then the story moves to Vienna and the film becomes an entirely different affair, unobtrusively stylish, with an extended ball scene as its centrepiece, very clearly influenced by Forst's "Maskerade" and looking simply gorgeous. Ophuls also came to my mind more than once. Fantastic performance by Hilde Krahl in a role that would have been ideal for Paula Wessely, too. Intense and fragile at the same time.

Enough of the namedropping. This film seems to be an unjustly overlooked one in Käutner's oeuvre, perhaps because it's slightly untypical and people might be irritated by the genre mix. But it really works very well, and is a must-see for all the fans of the Viennese film in particular. Very highly recommended.
