Kaum ist der amerikanische Bürgerkrieg vorbei, wird die amerikanische Nation erneut in ihren Grundfesten erschüttert. Präsident Abraham Lincoln wird ermordet. Die Südstaatlerin Mary Surratt (Robin Wright) wird als einzige Frau neben mehreren Männern der Verschwörung zum Mord an dem Präsidenten angeklagt. Dem jungen frischgebackenen Anwalt Frederick Aiken (James McAvoy), ein Kriegsheld der Nordstaaten, fällt die undankbare Aufgabe die meistgehasste Frau des Landes zu verteidigen. Ihre Verurteilung scheint beschlossene Sache und auch Aiken ist sich sicher, dass seine Mandantin schuldig ist. Doch umso weiter der Prozess voranschreitet, umso unsicherer wird sich Aiken. Fasziniert von seiner Mandantin, stürzt er sich in den Fall und versucht die Wahrheit zu finden, die Mary Surratt vor dem Galgen bewahren könnte.
