This 4-Disc DVD set comprises three poetic and haunting epics from this great visionary master of world cinema, and also exclusively includes the world DVD premiere of Tomáš Hejtmánek’s intimate documentary portrait of Vlácil, Sentiment.
Voted the best Czech film ever made, Marketa Lazarová is a powerful and passionate medieval epic set in the mid-13th Century. Based on avant-garde writer Vladislav Vancura's novel, it follows the rivalry between two warring clans, the Kozlíks and the Lazars, and the doomed love affair of Mikolás Kozlík and Marketa Lazarová.
Re-creating an authentic world and as reminiscent of Tarkovsky and Kurosawa as it is of the rich tapestry of Czech fiction, this ambitious and multi-layered film is the crowning achievement of Vlácil's career and one of the undiscovered cornerstones of world cinema.
This is the first-ever DVD release of Marketa Lazarová anywhere in the world.

A visionary and evocative medieval epic, Vlácil’s The Valley of the Bees is just as powerful and engrossing a film as his more famous Marketa Lazarová.
It chronicles the tale of a young boy forced to join the Order of the Teutonic Knights. As he grows into a man his desire to return to his homeland leads him to abandon the Crusaders, only to be pursued by a fanatical former comrade and pay a terrible price for his rejection of the Holy Order.
With its resplendent black-and-white cinematography and highly convincing recreation of 13th-century Europe, the film is a raw and haunting moral fable which raises questions about the conflict between human nature and dogmatism.
Released just before the ’68 Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia, the film’s theme was given a political interpretation and its screenings severely restricted by the authorities.
"An incredibly beautiful, immensely powerful and complex film. Philosophical and haunting, it grows ever more richer with subsequent viewings" DVD Outsider
“Vlácil was, with just a handful of films to prove it, the Czech New Wave's formalist, post-expressionist wrecking ball, their Welles, their Paradjanov” Village Voice
"This magnificent Czech New Wave entry made me reflect on Paradjanov, Kurosawa, and especially Tarkovsky" DVD Beaver
“Combines the epic grandeur of Kurosawa with the compositional rigour of Eisenstein” Pacific Cinematheque

The first colour film by Czech master František Vlácil (director of the dazzling The Valley of the Bees and Marketa Lazarová), Adelheid is a tragic love story, a controversial and emotional tale of two lovers trapped in the march of history.
Set in the aftermath of WWII, the film charts the relationship between Viktor, a Czech airman returning home who is assigned a large Sudetenland mansion on the Czech-German border, and Adelheid, daughter of the former Nazi owner, who is allocated to him as a servant. Adelheid and Viktor are gradually attracted to each other and although neither speaks the other's language, they begin a tentative - but doomed - affair.
A compelling love story that transcends the absence of verbal communication highlighting the pain of a country in defeat, Adelheid was also the first film to controversially address the Czech treatment of German's during the expulsions of the mid-1940's.
"An exquisite, engaging film" The Digital Fix
"Provides a profound analysis of the human distortions caused by ideology" Peter Hames, Central Europe Review
