A multi award winning animation by Czech animator Michaela Pavlatova

A rising star of the Czech animation scene, Michaela Pavlatova is part of the next generation of innovative animators carrying on in the tradition of Jan Svankmajer and Jiri Trnka. Her lively pencil drawings are replete with social commentary and dark humor, and she also paints and illustrates magazines and books. Born in Prague, Pavlatova studied animation at the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design in Prague. Her films have received numerous awards at international film festivals, including a prestigious Oscar nomination for Reci, reci, reci (Words, Words, Words) (1991).

The story of the film takes place in a cafe where various human types and characters sit at tables. They chat about different things via an animated "language" of artistic symbols and pictures. The symbols and pictures interact, conflict and tell in an easily understandable and amusing way about people who, at first sight, are only chatting in a cafe.

Pavlatova’s animations Words, Words, Words (1991) exemplifies the power of the visual pun associated with the Eastern European animation tradition. Words, Words, Words is indeed chock-full with examples of a visual ‘language’ that require the audience’s interaction and interpretation, and the film itself is a poignant and hilarious study of the human need to interact. Pavlatova’s masterful linework, her delight in a playful absurdity, and her predilection for conceptual complexity rather than trite answers, may be compared with the approach of Steinberg, Steig, and the Estonian animator Priit Parn.
