Nel 1967 il giovane Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen) parte come volontario per la guerra del Vietnam. Giunto a destinazione è assegnato ad un plotone d'assalto comandato dal tenente Wolfe (Mark Moses) che in realtà non ha alcuna voce in capitolo, poiché ad impartire gli ordini alla truppa sono i sergenti Barnes (Tom Berenger) ed Elias (Willem Dafoe), due veterani della guerra, forti dell'esperienza accumulata nella campagna militare. Chris si confronta subito con la realtà che lo circonda: massacri, torture fisiche e psicologiche a soldati americani e prigionieri civili…
