La diciassettenne Ree Dolly (Jennifer Lawrence) si avventura in una pericolosa missione alla ricerca di suo padre, scomparso nel nulla dopo aver impegnato la casa di famiglia per pagarsi la cauzione ed uscire di prigione. Se l'uomo non si presenterà al più presto in tribunale la casa verrà confiscata. Ree, posta di fronte al rischio di ritrovarsi tra i boschi dell'altopiano di Ozark senza un tetto, sfida l'omertà della gente e mette a repentaglio la propria vita per salvare la famiglia, senza accettare le bugie, i sotterfugi e le minacce dei suoi parenti, fino a scoprire la verità.
