Mother and Child (2010)

Karen è una donna di mezza età che, a quattordici anni, aveva messo al mondo una bambina poi data in adozione; da allora, Karen ha sempre vissuto nel rimpianto di non aver mai conosciuto sua figlia. Elizabeth è un’avvocatessa dal carattere cinico e individualista, che rifugge qualsiasi legame sentimentale. Lucy e Joseph sono due coniugi che, non riuscendo ad avere un bambino, decidono di adottarne uno.
I tre episodi raccontati nel film vedono in scena tre donne, ciascuna a suo modo alle prese con la sfida della maternità. C’è la maternità rimpianta di Karen (Annette Bening), una fisioterapista cinquantenne che non si è mai perdonata per aver dato in adozione la bambina che aveva avuto a quattordici anni, e che ora si porta dentro un carico di frustrazione e di rabbia repressa che le impediscono di essere felice. C’è la maternità inaspettata di Elizabeth (Naomi Watts), data in adozione subito dopo la nascita e diventata una donna in carriera fredda e scostante, incapace di instaurare alcun legame reale e sincero col prossimo. Ed infine c’è la maternità negata di Lucy (Kerry Washington), che decide di ricorrere all’adozione per colmare il proprio desiderio di avere un bambino.

Almost forty years ago, a young girl of fourteen has sex, gets pregnant, and gives her baby up for adoption. Fast-forwarding to the present day, we meet three very different women, each of whom struggles to maintain control of their lives. There's Elizabeth, a smart and successful lawyer who uses her body to her advantage. Any time she feels that she doesn't have the upper hand, and cannot control the situation, she uses her sex appeal - whether that be starting a romance with her boss when she suspects he is trying to start one himself, or finding some way to control her overly friendly neighbor and husband. Karen, meanwhile, is a bitter health care professional who obviously has a lot of heart but never shows it. She gave up a daughter at the age of fourteen (wonderfully shown rather than told, she is the young girl and mother of Elizabeth), and has never gotten over it - her bitterness inspiring her to lash out at everyone around her…
