L'americano John Robie, detto "il Gatto", era diventato celebre in Francia, prima della guerra, per la sua straordinaria abilità nel compiere furti di gioielli. Questa sua criminosa attività gli aveva fruttato però la prigione e soltanto i casi della guerra gliene avevano aperte le porte, permettendo a lui e ad altri detenuti di unirsi alla Resistenza. Terminata la guerra, gli ex detenuti hanno ottenuto definitivamente la libertà in riconoscimento dei servizi resi alla Francia. John Robie si è ritirato sulla Riviera francese in una lussuosa villa ma essendosi verificato nella regione un furto di gioielli, compiuto secondo il suo ben noto metodo, la tranquillità di Robie ne viene compromessa, in quanto la polizia sospetta di lui. Per sottrarsi all'arresto, Robie si reca presso il suo amico Bertani che è stato il suo capo nella Resistenza e dirige ora un ristorante. Il personale del ristorante è composto di ex detenuti, e fra questi c'è un certo Foussard, con sua figlia Danielle. Bertani fa conoscere a Robie un certo Hughson, rappresentante di una compagnia presso la quale sono assicurati preziosi gioielli appartenenti a ricchi signori attualmente in vacanza sulla Riviera. Robie riesce a convincere Hughson della propria innocenza e questi lo presenta ad una delle sue più ricche clienti americane, Madame Stevens, ed alla sua bella figliola, Francie. Le due signore concepiscono la più viva simpatia per Robie: accade però che mentre Robie si trova nelle loro stanze, vengono rubati i gioielli di Madame Stevens. Rinascono i sospetti sul conto di Robie, il quale però confida all'assicuratore che egli conosce il ladro ed è certo che i responsabili dei furti cercheranno di disfarsi di lui. Egli sfugge infatti per miracolo ad un attentato, mentre viene ucciso per errore uno degli aggressori, Foussard. Recovery Volumes (.rev)

Recovery volumes or .rev files are special files which can be created by WinRAR/RAR and allow you to reconstruct missing and damaged files in a volume set. They can
only be used with multi-volume archives.

This feature may be useful for backups or, for example, when you post a multivolume archive to a newsgroup and some of the subscribers did not receive some files. Reposting recovery volumes instead of usual volumes may reduce the total number of files to repost.

Each recovery volume is able to reconstruct one missing RAR volume. For example, if you have 30 volumes and 3 recovery volumes, you are able to reconstruct any 3 missing volumes. If the number of .rev files is less than a number of missing volumes, reconstructing is impossible. The total number of usual and recovery volumes must not exceed 255 and the number of recovery volumes must be less than the number of RAR volumes.

WinRAR reconstructs missing and damaged volumes either when clicking on .rev file, or when using rc command or automatically, if it cannot locate the next volume and finds the required number of .rev files when unpacking.

You may use the "Recovery volumes" option in the Archive name and parameters dialog or a similar option also appears in the Protect archive command to create recovery volumes. In the command line mode you may do it with -rv switch or rv command.

Original copies of damaged volumes are renamed to *.bad before reconstruction. For example, volname.part03.rar will be renamed to volname.part03.rar.bad.
